Bonked if there ever was a Bonk

Wonder what happened to our post yesterday? Well I'll tell you. Instead of going out for my run and getting home in time to post, I bonked.

I went for a 20 miler, and ended up only running 13 and walking 7.  7 whole miles of walking really reminded me these few things.

#1 - I hate my water belt. I always have so regardless of whether it was the water belts fault or not, I will blame it.

Do you recognize this photo.... it is the chocolate covered cheesecake Heather and I ate at the State Fair a few weeks back. I was thinking about how Real Delicious this little slice of heaven was while walking those lovely 7 miles.

#2 - On any run longer then 10 miles I say as a rule of thumb, bring my cell phone. I used to always bring my cell in my little pouch that goes around my waist but have since done away with that pouch thinking the water belt was more important.... but alas, another reason to blame the dumb water belt, no place for my cell.

#3 - When you stop at some random store and ask to borrow their phone to call your husband and he offers to come pick you up, let him...... I was like, "na, don't worry about it." I thought it would be no big deal walking 7 lonely miles back to my car. But I'll tell you by the time I got to my car I was so hungry and thirsty (I ditched the water belt shortly after I stopped running) that I thought I started seeing little birds twirling around my head.

This was a delicious Giada recipe that I had made the night prior. I think she is my favorite. Towards the end of my never ending walk I started thinking about how I couldn't wait to eat the leftovers.

So anywhoo, yesterday wasn't one to write home about it but alas you get to all hear me complain in this lovely post. But really, although I am complaining this run didn't get me down too much. I have bonked before and will bonk again.  It is part of running. Live and learn =)

If anyone out there doesn't know what bonking is, here is my definition.

Bonking - When any someone can not finish a run for any type of reason they deem fit. Whether it be some kind of ache or pain, or maybe just they you weren't feeling it that day. All runners have bonk days.

I hope all your running adventures are better then mine was yesterday!  Happy weekend =)

Veggies and More

While I was in Minnesota my intake on veggies was pretty minimal.  But on the last day Heather and I woke up went for a run and then headed over to the St. Paul Farmers Market.  It is probably one of the nicest farmer markets I have ever been to.  They always have a ton of stuff and it always looks amazing =) I decided that I am going to try to eat lots veggies everyday.  I typically do eat some vegetables but I need to eat more.

Heather stretching after our morning run.  Towards the end of the run we spiced it up a bit and played don't let the other person pass you.  It was quite fun =)  I highly recommend it.

Check out all the fresh produce.  YUM. You can only see 1/10th of what was there.

They had lots of flavored honey sticks. I picked up one of each flavor for myself and a friend. I have actually never tried one yet, but I have a stash of about 15 in my little running box.

Who can say no to these asparagus?  Standing them up like that made them look extra delicious.

So far this week my workouts have been going well.  I am actually loving them.  Which is good because I know that sometimes I truly don't love them.

For a recap, Monday I ran 5 Miles.

Tuesday: I went to running club and did 12 - 200/200's with 1 for 1 recovery. Basically the 200/200 is a 400 but the first 200 was supposed to be at 3k pace followed by the last 200 at 1 mile pace.  So you come in relatively fast and then recover for the same amount of time.  Then after that I headed to barbell class where I pumped some iron.  I don't know about you guys but I NEED SOME MUSCLES!  I totally slacked during my training for the last marathon and I don't want that to happen again.

Wednesday: I went biking for 23.5 miles. Then I went and swam 525m.  I am trying to figure out how fast I can actually swim.  I have no idea how to judge so today I just went at a pace where I felt in control and knew I could keep swimming that way for a while.  So now for my Sprint Tri I am going to try to be faster.  I don't really know how to shave off time in the pool?  Speed workouts??? I dunno.

Thursday: Run 8 miles with friends from club.  YAY for running buds.  They rule.
Friday: Swim again and also attend a Total Conditioning class at lifetime.
Saturday: Tempo run with club followed by some kind of bike ride.

Does anyone know any good biking speed workouts?  Like riding up the same hill 10 times or something??

Also, who likes honey sticks?
-I will try one tomorrow, as I was typing this post I realize it is ridiculous that I keep buying these things but really have no idea what they taste like.

Is there a swimmer out there can give me a good workout for the pool?
-I only have 1 workout that my swimming teacher gave us while doing a swim lesson a month or so back.  I am looking for more.

Happy Running, Swimming and Biking all -Jen

Dinner with Me

My husband Scott has been busy with work which means dinner is with me, myself and I.  So I decided to make the usual.  This is a great dinner that is healthy and fast, I make it a lot so to change it up I just add different kinds of seasoning to the meat.

First off, I start the asparagus roasting in the oven at 400.  I spray them with canola oil from Trader Joe's  and season with salt and pepper.  I roast them for about 12-15 mins.

Next is the acorn squash. I slice it in half, scrape out the middle and put it upside down in the microwave for about 7-8 mins. (this time is for 1 half) I know it is not good to micro the veggies but sometimes I just run out of time and don't have that hour to let them roast.  Plus I DO think you get SOME nutrients, I mean really, it is still a veggie right?

On to the chicken, I buy the frozen chicken tenders from Trader's, unthaw them and last night I seasoned them with Emeril's steak rub which is really spicy.  I get my pan hot on the stove, spray with oil spray and put the chicken in the pan.  I cook each side about 5 mins or so.

When the micro goes off I flip the squash and continue to cook another 5 mins.  With about 1-2 mins left I put a little, bitty bit of butter.  I mean just a little people. You don't need a lot and then I add a small amount of brown sugar cuz I love it!

Then...... after all the timers are done and off and 15 mins later dinner is served!

It was so good and de-lish and for dessert I am sure I have room for some dark chocolate.

Bon Appetit!
